The Finley Gun Club is this week’s Sport Star of the Week.
The club has members from across the region including Barooga, Albury, Numurkah and the surrounding towns.
Former club president Doug Thomas said the club is ideal for grassroots target shooting.
‘‘We’re essentially a down-the-line clay target club, which is different to other target shooting like Olympic trap and skeet, which more people are familiar with.
‘‘It’s a similar sport but not quite as intense. We’re more of a club where you get to learn about what the sport is all about.
‘‘It’s really the training ground for grassroots levels and you would move onto higher levels if you wanted to take it further.’’
Thomas said he and other members have been able to take their skills with the Finley Gun Club to top levels.
Former Berrigan local and gun club shooter Jim Ellis is in the Australian Clay Target Association Hall of Fame.
Thomas and current president Shane Hay both competed at the Riverina Zone Championships a few weeks ago, with Hay earning second place in the A grade double barrel.
Thomas competed for Australia at the veterans down-the-line world titles in South Africa in 2010 and shot as an individual in the USA a few years ago.
‘‘It was a great experience shooting in the USA. There were about 200 competitors from across the world over an 11 day event.’’
The Finley Gun Club meet once a month at their facility on the Newell Highway south of Finley.
