The LGBTI Equality Roadshow will arrive in Shepparton tomorrow with the aim of developing an LGBTI Inclusion Plan.
The LGBTI Equality Roadshow is being undertaken across Victoria by the state’s first Gender and Sexuality Commissioner Rowena Allen, who will meet with stakeholders from the LGBTIQ community plus mainstream organisations, businesses and community members.
Kildonan Uniting Care Diversity Project community development worker Damien Stevens said this was an excellent opportunity for people to discuss creating a safe and inclusive environment for members of the LGBTIQ community.
‘‘It’s a significant event and we want all backgrounds represented,’’ he said.
‘‘We want to ensure their voices are around the table this Friday.’’
Mr Stevens said Ms Allen came to Shepparton last year during the OUTintheOPEN Festival with a trial version of the LGBTI Equality Roadshow and consulted community groups and service providers then.
This trial, which also went to Mildura and Swan Hill, helped make the LGBTI Equality Roadshow possible and Ms Allen has now visited numerous regional and rural towns in the state this year.
Mr Steven said the roadshow gave people the chance to put their ideas and concerns on the table to help improve the mental health and wellbeing of LGBTIQ people.
The LGBTIQ Equality Roadshow will be held tomorrow from 9am to noon at the Greater Shepparton City Council boardroom, 90 Welsford St, Shepparton. To attend, RSVP to Rowena Doo at firstname.lastname@example.org and include any special dietary requirements.
