International day recognises value of milk

For some June 1 marks the start of winter but for others it will always be World Milk Day and a chance to say a moo-sive thank-you to the dairy industry.

According to Dairy Australia figures there are more than 1.65million cows in Australia, with one cow producing 5525 litres of milk each year on average.

Australian dietary guidelines encourage the consumption of milk, known for its high calcium content, with the average Australian drinking 107 litres of milk every year.

Now in its 17th year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation initiative recognises the positive impact of dairy as a key source of nutrition and for its role as an economic and social cornerstone of communities around the world.
